The latest Tie One On Challege theme was Havana Nights and the inspiration for Amy Karol(challenge host) was the documentary Buena Vista Social Club. OK, I'll admit I didn't watch the movie, but I did check out a few clips on you tube and I did enjoy the music. However, my inspiration came more from the song "Cuban Pete"! So this is my interpretation of a Havana Nights apron...more of retro take on it, I suppose. I think it works!
Theme aside, can I just say it? I LOVE IT! I love it, I love it, I love it! Not braggin' cause there are soooo many things that went wrong! For example there's something like 12 feet (I exaggerate) of fabric wadded up into the waistband...so the waistband is a mess! BUT the ties are long enough that I can wrap them around and cover that up! Also, I thought I'd pull my hair out applying all that ric-rac and ribbon! ...and I used my seam ripper more times than I can count on this one. But isn't it FUN?
I had originally thought of using this fabric, but then I decided it was a little more Tex-Mex than Cuban. I read somewhere that red and white were traditional cuban colors, so I decided on the red and white fabrics instead. Still really wanting to use some of the cute girly fabric, I thought I'd just cut out one of the ladies on the print and applique' her to the finished skirt. Here she is, ready to go...But once it was finished, I realized there was no room among all those gathers and my little senorita would be just be lost. I'm saving her for another project.
One more look at the finished product! I think I'll go dance and twirl around the house now!

ah cha cha! Looks magnificent! *applause*
Does it make you want to cook & clean? Just wonderin'
WOW!! What a beautiful apron - I LOVE how it turned out.
It makes me want to run out and try to conquer that much rick-rack and gathering myself ... however, I seriously doubt it'll be any time soon. LOL
I have the "Mexican Hat Dance" song in my head now.
It looks like you should be dancing around your kitchen with it on. Hope that's what your doing.
Looks fantastic.
Oh my goodness!!!! That is so, so, so cute! I love it!!!
Like everybody else, I love it! All that rick rack makes me happy.
Adorable!!! :) Very Cuban...not that I know anything about Cuban culture or Cuban housewives...but it's an apron I would imagine a cute cuban wife would wear. ;) The red bracelet looks adorable with it! :)
I just LOVE the apron. It's so perfect!
woo hoo! I would throw out a Cuban phrase, but of course I don't know any. That is adorable. You did a fantastic job! TONS of gathering! Was it hard to get into the waist line? Is that what you were talkig about in the post? I LOVE IT!
I really like the Cuban pin-up girl fabric. You'll have to app it to a tshirt and wear it with the apron.
I also love it. I think it looks like traditional Cuban skirts.
we truly are too much alike. I just bought that girly fabric to use for a Cinco De Mayo apron for myself!
OH! I just LOVE IT! Beautiful color combo and the ricrac is PERFECT!
Did you use a pattern? or just make it up on your own?
LOVE IT!
SO WONDERFUL! I'm studying it closely to try to copy it. Hope you don't mind! I absolutely love it!
